Exploration Guild Recruitment

Cinnamon Bun

Exploration Guild Recruitment is the turning point at which Broccoli Bunch moves from an unaffiliated adventurer responding to quests into a recognized, if only temporary, member of the Exploration Guild. The recruitment gives institutional shape to her abilities and promises a partner, expedition, equipment, and access to a wider adventuring network; it also exposes how quickly that welcome can become conditional when the guild decides that her inexperience makes her a liability.

Discovery of the Guild and the Open Door

Broccoli’s approach to the guild is preceded by encounters with the local infrastructure surrounding adventuring. In Rockstack, guards identify the settlement as Royal Outpost Seven and direct attention toward the Exploration Guild. Elsewhere, the clumsy Grenoil alchemist Dylan receives the flowers Broccoli gathered for his quest, while an attentive Grenoil City Guard in a metal helmet helps her navigate the city. These small exchanges place her inside a network of guards, merchants, quest-givers, and professional explorers before she has formally joined it.

At the guild headquarters, Broccoli tells the Grenoil secretary that she is curious about joining. Her timing immediately attracts Mister Rainnewt, a human official dressed in an ostentatious ascot and close-fitting suit jacket. More important than his appearance is the letter she carries from Leonard Chand’nuit. Rainnewt examines its unbroken seal, recognizes Leonard as one of the guild’s senior members, and learns that Broccoli met him in the Darkwoods. The recommendation converts a newcomer’s uncertain request into a promising institutional lead: Rainnewt says that she may be exactly what he needs and brings her to his lavish office, where maps and displays frame recruitment as both administration and exploration.

Contract, Costs, and Provisional Status

Rainnewt presents Broccoli with registration papers and asks whether she knows how to write her name. Rather than simply signing, she reads the entire document, treating the contract as something to inspect rather than a formality to endure. The agreement makes her a temporary member for one month or until she fulfills specified requirements. It grants practical protections, including discounts at certain guilds, reduced travel costs, and possible reimbursement for food and special equipment.

The arrangement is not charitable. Broccoli notices that the guild will take fifty percent of her profits for three years to recover the admission cost. She also observes that the temporary period applies to applicants who do not pay the first year’s membership fee in advance. Her questions about how the first year is calculated and whether the fee should be reduced for the portion of the year already elapsed reveal a sharp awareness of institutional terms. Rainnewt confirms the financial arrangement and agrees to see what can be done about the timing of the fee.

Broccoli nevertheless retains an exit route. Nothing in the contract prevents her from quitting if the guild proves unsuitable, and a grace period allows her to pay the admission fee later. She therefore postpones the final decision until after her first mission. Her signature, written as “Broccoli Bunch” in large letters with Rainnewt’s shiny pen, creates membership without closing off refusal. The recruitment is thus a threshold, but not an irrevocable surrender of independence.

Badge, Expedition, and Immediate Opportunity

After accepting the paperwork, Rainnewt explains the guild’s visible culture of rank and accomplishment. Most members wear a bandoleer as a tradition, but Broccoli already has one; pins and medals on clothing indicate a member’s standing and achievements. He gives her a badge, which she pins over her heart. The badge turns an abstract contract into a public sign of affiliation, while its position over her heart gives the institutional token a personal and almost emotional placement.

Rainnewt welcomes her as Miss Bunch and acknowledges that her entrance is abnormal, but he presents that abnormality as a source of opportunity. He instructs her to report to the lobby the next day two hours before noon with everything needed for a week-long voyage. When Broccoli reacts with surprise at the speed of the assignment, Rainnewt answers with the principle that opportunity waits for no one. The recruitment therefore does not end at paperwork: it immediately commits her to preparation, travel, and cooperation with an expeditionary partner.

Broccoli leaves the guild house with plans forming and understands that the following day she will meet her partner and begin a grand adventure. Her anticipation is directed not only toward travel but toward friendship; she imagines using the expedition as an opportunity to turn the new partner into her “very best friend ever.” Orange is present when she pins on the badge, and her gesture of rubbing Orange’s sleeping head connects the new public identity of guild member with the intimate companionship she already possesses.

The first formal mission is recorded as Exploration Guild Expedition No. 124 of Year 398PC, assigned to the Port-Royal Branch. Its stated purpose is to explore, scout, and map the region around decommissioned Fort Froger before returning to the meeting point. This official summary gives the recruitment a concrete institutional destination: Broccoli’s provisional membership is tested not in an office but through a planned expedition governed by a mission statement, a branch, a number, a year, and a defined return obligation.

From Welcome to Conditional Exclusion

The guild’s welcome later proves unstable. After the expedition, a senior woman orders Gabriel to give Broccoli a coin purse containing standard mission pay and show her out. Broccoli initially wonders whether the dismissal concerns the unpaid admission fee, since Rainnewt had indicated that payment could wait until her return. The woman rejects that explanation. Broccoli is being removed because she is considered a liability, and the woman states that she should never have been allowed to join.

This reversal changes the meaning of the recruitment without erasing its earlier reality. Rainnewt had read the recommendation from Leonard Chand’nuit as evidence of potential, negotiated a temporary contract, issued a badge, and offered a place on a week-long voyage. The later authority instead judges Broccoli by risk and institutional standards. The same guild that treats her unusual arrival as an opportunity can reinterpret it as a procedural error once her usefulness or reliability is questioned.

The recruitment consequently produces both belonging and precarity. Broccoli gains a badge, mission pay, contractual protections, and entry into a professional network, but her membership remains probationary and dependent on the guild’s assessment of her. Her questions about profit shares and admission fees show that she can scrutinize the institution’s economic terms; the dismissal shows that financial compliance is not the only power the institution possesses. It can also decide whether her presence is acceptable at all.

Narrative and Institutional Significance

The event parallels the wider pattern by which Broccoli’s actions are translated into system-recognized status. A mysterious quest menu calls on her to save the world; cleaning a room unlocks the Cleaning skill; defeating three Sentinel Ghosts grants bonus experience and advances her Cinnamon Bun class; breaking the relevant core completes a dangerous quest; and repeated interaction eventually unlocks the general skill Friendmaking. The guild recruitment extends this logic from supernatural menus into social administration. Her adventure becomes legible through a letter, a contract, a badge, an expedition number, and a payment schedule.

Yet the guild does not simply reward good intentions or accumulated skill. It ranks, prices, supervises, and filters access. Its secretary, guards, branch records, official forms, and senior members create a chain linking local movement to a larger organization. Broccoli’s experience reveals the tension between an institution’s promise to turn individual ability into opportunity and its power to withdraw recognition when the individual no longer fits its expectations.

For Broccoli, joining the Exploration Guild is therefore less a final arrival than a precarious threshold. She enters with Leonard Chand’nuit’s recommendation, signs on under terms she has actively examined, receives a badge over her heart, and sets out expecting a partner and a new friendship. The later order to pay her and remove her exposes the cost of that threshold: institutional belonging can accelerate an adventure, but it can also be revoked before the adventurer has secured a permanent place within the guild.
